Biography

As a furniture conservator and artist with over 25 years of professional experience Gene McCall has a broad grounding in the visual arts as well as the highly developed technical expertise necessary to evaluate and treat the conservation needs of a wide variety of aesthetically or historically important objects.
In 1991 he relocated to Florida from the New York City metropolitan area where he had his own company in Westchester County, New York, specializing in antique furniture conservation & restoration, sculpture, and furniture design.
Outline of Mr. McCall's diverse activities:
- While Mr. McCall's primary emphasis in antique conservation and restoration has been on English, American and Continental furniture of the 18th and early 19th centuries, he has at times been called upon to restore such wide ranging items as a pair of 14th century French statues, a 17th century chain mail shirt from the Mughal Court (another example of which is in the royal collection in the Tower of London), the desk of Louis Bonaparte (King of Holland and brother of the Emperor Napoleon), Egyptian tomb figures dating to the 18th century B.C., Ancient Roman oil lamps, a 9th century A.D. tear vial, Papal gifts, Ming knives, period rooms within a museum, Flemish tapestries, a Spanish Varguena with eighteen secret compartments, a Northwest Indian mask from the Rockefeller collection, an 18th century Chinese opium bed, the original Trading Pit at the New York Stock Exchange, and more.
- Mr. McCall is thoroughly proficient in French polishing, traditional lacquer, chinoiserie, carving, marquetry, both matte and water gilding, trompe-l'oeil, faux finishing, and the various other techniques of the restorer's art.
Furniture and objets d'art' he has restored reside in some of the world's finest museums and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of American Folk Art, the Menil Collection, the Chase Collection, The Ringling Museum, The H. B. Plant Museum, The St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, The Lightner Museum, and The Henry Francis Dupont Winterthur Museum, among others. Mr. McCall has also been filmed as a featured guest on The Antiques Road Show on PBS.
- Mr. McCall has extensive experience in furniture making and design, ranging from very traditional 18th century inspired designs through country and Shaker styles, to contemporary and futuristic studio furniture.
His work in these fields has appeared in various publications including Town & Country magazine, Preservation magazine, Fine Woodworking magazine, Woodwork magazine, Sarasota Magazine, a Christie's auction catalogue, Garrett Wade catalogues, the Sarasota Herald Tribune, the Sarasota Arts Review, the Tampa Tribune, the South Tampa News, the Venice Gondolier, the Pelican Press, The Gasparilla Gazette, The Englewood Review, and the Englewood Sun Herald among others.
He has also written feature articles and letters which have been published in national magazines such as Fine Woodworking's 100th issue and the premier issue of Home Furniture, as well as being included in books such as The Best of Fine Woodworking, and Japanese Woodworking Tools. He was the Judge of the Handcrafted Furniture Competition for the 1995, 1998, 2002 & 2003 Florida State Fair. Mr. McCall was also a recipient of the 1999 Outstanding Achievement Award by the Tampa/Hillsborough Planning Commission.
- He creates sculpture and paints in various media including bronze, wood, clay, oils, and acrylics. He has served on the continuing education faculty of the Ringling School of Art & Design, and is a colleague member of the National Sculpture Society. He is also a member of The American Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works, as well as The National Trust for Historic Preservation.
- Mr. McCall produces limited edition photography which has been marketed through a New York art gallery and at various art venues throughout the country.
- Gene McCall has been awarded a patent from the United States Patent & Trademark Office for the invention of a completely new type of extensible furniture. He also holds numerous copyrights.
